Reversible Purse Tote Bag - An Easy Project!

This is precisely two bags in one. Sometimes I find it difficult to find a bag I precisely like, manufacture your own allows you to conclude the color, shape and size.

I used coordinating denim and cotton fabric for these. Any fabric could be used, you may need a liner if using thin fabric. I would think this scheme to be more difficult because sewing skills and a motor is needed.

Tote Bag Sewing Pattern

I first drew out a pattern on craft paper, newspaper or tissue paper would work as well. I drew a square the shape and size I wanted my bag. I also drew a narrow rectangular shape the width I wanted my bag. This narrow rectangular piece is going to be the sides and lowest of the bag. You can either make three of these or one long one. If you pick to make one long piece, you need to make it long sufficient for the sides and bottom. This can be precisely done by naturally adding the distance of both sides and lowest and drawing the piece that size. You will also need to draw out a narrow strip for the strap and any pockets that you would like to add as well as a skinny strip for the tie enclosure. For an extra embellishment, a narrow piece about 1 inch thick and the distance of the sides and lowest and can be cut out, for piping.

After cutting out your pattern, pin the paper to your fabric. For the back and front of the bag, you will need to cut two pieces of fabric. For the lowest and sides, you will need to cut three, unless you conclude to use one piece for all three. You will need to cut two for the strap and tie. For any pockets, cut as many pockets as you want on or in your bag. If you chose to use piping, cut only one piece of fabric. If using two separate fabrics, you naturally repeat the above for the coordinating fabric. You will not need to cut any fabric for the ties, only cut two ties in what ever fabric you choose. If you chose to use only one fabric for the project, you need to double all of the pieces except for the tie, when cutting them out. After you have all your pieces cut out, it's time to sew.

Before you assemble the bag, add pockets, if any to the square pieces that will make up the front and back of your bag. Before sewing the pockets to the bag, it's best to hem the top of the pocket first. Fold the fabric of the pockets and pin them to the desired placement you would like them to be. Stitch the sides and lowest of the pocket to the front and back pieces.

When sewing, remember to stitch pieces with pattern side against each other so when you turn it inside out the pattern will be on the outside. If you have decided to use three individual pieces for the sides and bottom, it may be best to stitch the ends together before sewing them to the front and back of the bag. Stitch the sides and lowest to each side of the front and back pieces of the bag. For the straps of the bag, take one strip of each coordinating fabric, place them together, pattern side in, manufacture sure they are lined up. Stitch the straps down each side. When ended sewing, turn them right side out. For the tie enclosure, fold the fabric on half, tucking in any raw edges and naturally sew them together. Repeat with the coordinating fabric.

When both pieces are done, it's time to assemble the bag. To assemble these pieces, you need to turn one of them inside out. You should have one piece with the ended side showing and the other with the raw stitches showing. Take the piece that is inside out and place it inside of the other piece. Match up the corners and make sure it's a good fit. Finding at the bag, there should be only the ended sides exposed. Fold the tops of the bag over manufacture sure there are no raw edges exposed. Make sure the inside and face pieces are lined up. Pin the two pieces together. Before sewing these two pieces, you need to attach the straps and ties. Pin the straps and ties where you would like them, manufacture sure they line up with each other.

Now it's time to stop your bag. Sew the two pieces of the bag together at the top. Knot and cut any loose threads and your bag is done. naturally turn the bag inside out and you have a whole new look. This bag can go from casual day to a dressed up evening, just by turning it side out.

Take a look at all of your store-bought bags. Turn them inside out to see how they were sewn and what hardware was used, if any. Check out the straps, see what are they made of. Do you like the closure or would you prefer to see something else on the bag? maybe the closure is great but maybe you will need to add a few security measures like interior magnetic snaps for privacy.

What do you wish you favorite purse had...was it more pockets on the inside or outside or maybe both? Does the lowest of your purse get scuffed when you set it down or does it sag when you carry all your items except the kitchen sink in it? Then think solutions before you get started on your sewing a purse mission. The solutions may be easy and suitable like installing purse feet on your bag and putting a base in the lowest of your purse.

A good purse designer is also a great question solver. In design school, students are told that "form follows function". design the purpose of your purse and then back-up to originate the charm nearby it. It's nothing else but pointless to have a beautiful purse that can't hold anything and won't serve any useful purpose.

So here are a few things to reconsider when you are going to make bags.

1. Is it for work or the beach?
2. Is it a for casual or formal use?
3. What materials would you like it to be made from?
4. Do you need it to fit your make-up kit and large hairbrush or just lipstick, keys and a cell phone?
5. Does it need to coordinate with any outfit or shoe in particular?
6. Should your purse be soft or firm bodied?
7. How much money do you want to invest in making the purse?
8. What kind of lining should it have if any?
9. How much time are you willing to invest on creating your purse?
10. Is it for personal use or for sale?

These questions may not seem very prominent until you're ready to use the purse. It's at that point you find that your hairbrush, your glasses along with your husband's keys, his and your cell phones and some of what the kids want you to carry for them too just won't fit. In this case you will probably need to design a larger bag, maybe a tote with a strong canvas-like fabric. Now if your opening calls for you to be footloose and fancy free then you might wish to make a clutch purse. These can be pretty snazzy especially if it's made with custom painted fabrics.

Whatever you select to make, take your time and make it well. Ensure that the seams are properly stitched and your presentation is top-notch. Just because your purse is home-made doesn't mean it should to look thrown together. Set high standards and begin creating your totally awesome collection of custom sewn purses today.
